Hemp, industrial hemp, also called Cannabis Sativa L., is an extremely versatile plant, and one of the oldest cultivated plants known to mankind. It has been cultivated in Europe for centuries and is today one of the world's greatest commodities, as it has a number of industrial uses and sustainable benefits, while it can contribute significantly to our environment. From the hemp plant, all parts can be processed: the seeds, leaves, flowers, stalks, and roots can be used to make many products, for example, food, animal feed, cosmetics, paper, building materials, textiles, and bioplastics.
For us, hemp is one of mother nature's most extraordinary plants and we have no doubt that hemp can feed, clothe, shelter, and heal the entire world. Knowing all the uses and benefits of the hemp plant we couldn't help ourselves but embrace this crop.
Obelisk Farm is a hemp farm located in the eastern part of Latvia, in the region of Latgale. Its 1922 barns and homestead farmhouse impress the visitor as a calm and relaxed living environment. The beautiful countryside surroundings, with lovely hemp plants growing each season, are the result of efforts by Andris - our hemp farmer. Each year we grow different plot sizes but we usually grow 1 hectare of hemp.
We are committed to fostering a culture of land stewardship where we care for the farm's land not just for ourselves but for future generations and for countless species of wildlife that live here.
We employ crop rotations and use clovers as cover crops to improve organic matter and soil structure.
We enrich the soil with natural compost.
We practice no-till farming, thereby not disturbing the soil in order to decrease erosion and soil compaction as well as to encourage the growth of beneficial soil organisms, such as earthworms.
We participate on agricultural research projects.
Many labor-intensive, farming activities are done by hands, such as mulching, sowing, and harvesting, so we can minimize the amounts of external inputs.
All of our seed offerings are grown either by us or by like-minded farmers.
We believe we grow the best hemp in an environmentally sustainable way.
